What Promptchan AI Is?

Most AI girlfriend apps start with a chat window and bolt a camera on later. Promptchan went the other way. It began as an uncensored image generator, added video, and only then let its creations talk back, which is why the site still opens on a gallery of pictures and not on a row of girls waiting to say hi. Today one login gets you three tools: an image generator, a video generator and an AI girlfriend chat whose characters can turn the conversation into a picture.

Everything runs on one currency, the Gem. Images, video, chat messages and voice all spend from the same balance, and paid plans refill it every month. Keep that in mind through the rest of this review, because on Promptchan the plan you pick decides less than how you spend your Gems.

Promptchan Chat: Characters That Can Show You the Scene

The chat has its own tab and opens on the Discover feed: companions built by Promptchan and by other users, each with a name, a look, a backstory and a first message already written. Tap a card and you’re talking. There’s no setup screen in between, which is the right call for a site where plenty of visitors arrive for the pictures and wander into the chat.

There are two ways to talk. Chat mode is texting, short back-and-forth. Story mode makes her a character in a scene you direct: you describe what happens and she writes the next chapter. Choose before you get attached, though. Switching modes wipes the conversation history, so a long roleplay doesn’t survive a change of format.

You also pick the model per chat. v2.5 Pro gives longer, more involved replies and v2.5 Fast answers quicker, and a message costs a Gem or two depending on which one you use. Mid-chat you can change her personality settings or drop her into one of more than 50 prewritten scenarios, which is a quick way to restart a conversation that has gone flat.

The feature that sets Promptchan apart is a button called Create image from scene. Instead of leaving the chat to write an image prompt, you ask for a picture of the moment you’re in, and the generator reads the context: what she’s wearing, where you are, the mood. It spends Gems like any other image, and Promptchan’s own chat guide lists image generation in chat among the Pro features. It’s the same idea as the in-chat photos on Candy.ai, with one difference: when the scene picture isn’t quite right, the full image generator is one tab away.

Voice is billed per use. A voice message costs 1 Gem and a live call costs 2, and a couple of voices are free before the rest unlock on paid plans. The pricing page, however, lists Voice Call as a Pro feature, so check your plan before you count on calling her.

Building your own companion is where the plan starts to matter. The builder asks for a name and a look, either described in words or taken from an image you made or found in Explore, then personality, job, interests, background, sexuality, a scenario and her opening line. The pricing page puts custom characters under Pro, and Pro also gets advanced appearance sliders and the option to build a character straight from any image you’ve generated.

A note on memory. Promptchan promises that she “remembers who she is” and stays in character. That’s a promise about her persona, not about your history together, and unlike companion-first apps such as GirlfriendGPT it doesn’t publish a memory size. If a girlfriend who remembers your week is the point, start with a companion-first app.

The Promptchan Image Generator

This is the part Promptchan was built on, and the controls show it. You describe a character or a scene in plain language, add a negative prompt to rule things out, and pick a style: photorealistic, anime, illustrated or one of the stylised looks. Pose and composition controls let you set the framing instead of hoping the model guesses it, and that’s what keeps a character looking like the same person across a set.

The other half of the workflow is the Explore gallery. Every public creation has a Clone button that loads its recipe, so you can start from an image you like, change the prompt or the outfit and generate variations, instead of staring at an empty box. On paid plans you can generate privately, which keeps results out of the public gallery. Quality goes up with the plan: HD images on Plus and Premium, 4K and upscaling on Pro.

Promptchan’s guides put a standard image at roughly one Gem. Higher quality settings cost more, and the exact price sits on the generate button before you press it.

Promptchan AI Video: Text to Video or Animate an Image

Video is Pro-only, and there are two ways in. Text to video turns a prompt into a clip in one step: flip the Image/Video switch, describe the scene, then choose a style, a character, the orientation (portrait, wide or square), the quality and, if you like, AI-generated sound. Animate starts from a still: open an image you made, or any image in Explore, press Animate, and either leave the motion on Auto or describe it yourself (“she turns toward the camera and smiles”).

Extend continues a clip. Keep the same pose for a smooth join or change it to move the scene on, and there’s a freestyle option where you describe the next movement. Each clip costs what Promptchan calls “a handful” of Gems, more for higher quality, sound or a character in the shot, and again the cost is on the button before you commit. Clip length isn’t published.

One habit to build early: videos are deleted after 24 hours unless you publish them to the gallery. If a clip is for your eyes only, download it the same day.

The video here is a creative tool more than a companion feature. You direct a shot rather than receiving one in a conversation. If you’d rather have video tied to a character, Bonbon.ai opens its roleplays with 30-second Scenes and MyLovely AI makes 5 to 10 second clips of your companion.

Promptchan Pricing: Plans and Gems

So how much does Promptchan cost per month? Between $14.99 and $33.99, and the $10 step from Premium to Pro is the one that matters. Video, Extend, custom characters, voice calls and 4K all sit on Pro. Plus and Premium are image-and-chat plans with a bigger Gem balance. Pro also adds “unlimited casual generations” on top of its 800 Gems; the pricing page doesn’t define what counts as casual, so budget the Gems for video and the top quality settings.

Paid plans get 50% off extra Gems, and promotional prices show up at checkout from time to time, so look at the total before you pay. The refund policy mentions annual plans with Gems credited monthly, but the pricing page only lists monthly prices. Most chat-first apps we’ve reviewed start under $10 a month on an annual plan, so Promptchan sits at the expensive end, and you are paying for the generators more than for the chat.

You can cancel from your account settings and the plan runs to the end of the paid period. Refunds are possible within 30 days of a charge, but only if you haven’t used “significant AI services” in that time and only after you’ve cancelled. Crypto payments are final.

Is Promptchan Free?

Yes, with limits it doesn’t spell out. A free account gets a daily allowance of Gems with no card required, and you can generate images, chat and browse or clone the gallery. Chat starts with “a handful of messages”, after which each message costs Gems like everything else. Promptchan doesn’t publish the size of the daily allowance, and video, custom characters, private generation and 4K aren’t part of the free plan.

Use the free account to judge two things: whether the image styles suit you, and whether a Discover character holds a conversation the way you want. Those are the two things you’d be paying for.

Is Promptchan Safe?

As a business it checks the basic boxes: a named operator under Irish law, cancellation from your account settings and a written refund policy. You pay by card, and the terms also mention crypto, which can’t be refunded.

The content rules allow uncensored adult material between adults, with hard limits. The terms ban minors and anything presented as a minor, including high-school settings, non-consensual deepfakes, and depictions of real people (celebrities, public figures or private individuals) without their consent, along with incest, bestiality and a few other categories. Moderation combines automated blocking, report buttons and human moderators. Don’t upload photos of real people. Besides breaking the rules, it’s the fastest way to lose an account.

On privacy, the policy was updated on October 2, 2026 but doesn’t spell out how chats and generated images are stored. Use private generation if you’re on a paid plan, keep personal details out of prompts and chats, and remember that anything you publish to Explore is public. Promptchan holds 4.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot from a little over 200 reviews. The complaints that come up are Gems not credited after a purchase, features changed or removed without notice, such as uploading a face reference, and slow replies from support.

Promptchan App: Web, iOS and Android

The pricing page lists web, iOS and Android, and the web version works in any phone browser, so you don’t need to install anything to try it. If you do search the app stores, check the developer and make sure the app points to promptchan.com: unofficial apps use the Promptchan name. Some users report that purchases made in the app and on the web don’t always sync, so buy Gems on the version you use most.

Which alternative fits depends on why Promptchan didn’t. Promptchan is strongest when you want to direct the picture, and weaker when you want the relationship.

Promptchan suits people who like making the picture as much as talking to the girl in it. If you enjoy steering a pose, cloning a gallery image and animating the result, the tools here are deeper than the image buttons in most chat apps, and Create image from scene links the two halves better than switching between sites does. If you want a girlfriend who remembers last Tuesday, it isn’t built around that.
